Madyson Milordi knows about looking good under pressure. The teen wunderkind has recently enjoyed one of the most exciting—and busiest—years of her life. She graduated from Lynnfield High School, where she served as a two-sport MVP athlete, peer advisor, and honor student, as well as volunteered as an ambassador to Best Buddies International, an organization dedicated to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She also maintained a demanding schedule as current titleholder of Miss Massachusetts Teen. At the time of our interview, Milordi was fielding two scholarship offers—one from nearby Merrimack College, and the other from Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island—with hopes of an eventual career in sports broadcasting.

Milordi took a break on her road to the crown (she’ll head to the Bahamas in August to compete in the Miss Teen USA pageant) to show off some of this season’s juiciest styles, from neon brights to ladylike florals, as well as share her thoughts as to why summer on the North Shore is simply the best around. The mercury’s rising—and so is this local star. Catch her if you can.

On personal style—and being voted Best Dressed at Lynnfield High School

I like to be dressed to a “T,” you might say. I like things that are colorful, that stand out a bit; clothes that are classic, but still stylish, in the moment, and on trend. I’ll wear vibrant lip color, for example, or I’ll take a simple outfit and dress it up with a chunky bracelet or dangly earrings. BCBG at the Burlington Mall is one of my favorite places to shop, and I’ll head to Glitterati in Danvers if I need a formal dress for one of my [Miss Teen] events. I like to browse around the North Shore area to find new boutiques, too; it’s nice to find things that are unique, so that I’m not wearing the same thing as everyone else. You could definitely pick me out in a crowd.

On the appearance of having—and doing—it all

It’s busy, and at times it can be difficult—but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. This [title] is what I worked diligently toward for three years, and so I’ve tried to embrace every moment along the way. I’ve been fortunate in having flexible, cooperative teachers who’ve allowed me to do my schoolwork while I’m on the road—I travel with my laptop—and if there’s anything that I’ve learned during my reign, it’s the importance of time management. Other kids might sleep in on the weekends, for example; whereas I recently had to wake up at 4 a.m. for a 6 a.m. flight to Philadelphia to take part in a photoshoot [for the pageant] before flying back to go to school the next day. It might be easy for some people to see only the glamorous side of it. I think it’s important for other girls who are interested in competing [in future pageants] to know just how much hard work there is ahead of them.

On staying stylish when the days are sweltering

I don’t necessarily abide by any [summer style] rules—it’s fun to change it up and experiment with different looks—but I love the ease of rompers and loose-fitting maxi dresses, especially in this season’s mint hues. I’ll also go a bit softer with my makeup and wear less of it. Fortunately, I don’t have to spend money on my hair because it naturally lightens in the sun.

On her favorite summertime activities

I’m a long-distance runner, and [running is] the best in the summer.  The weather is amazing, the scenery is beautiful—the gardens, the homes—there’s nothing like getting a good sweat on outside. I enjoy doing just about anything outdoors, to be honest. I’ll go for runs around my town with my cousin, or along [the path at] Nahant Beach. I love Long Beach on the Rockport-Gloucester line, and I love Cape Cod. Biking is really nice, too. I have family that lives nearby, and we’ll have barbecues every Sunday. Plus, we live 20 minutes from the beach—it doesn’t get much better than that.

The Miss Teen USA pageant will air live from Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas on Saturday, August 10, at 8 p.m. EST. For more information about Miss Teen USA and the Miss Universe Organization, visit missuniverse.com.

Club Level

At 25 years old and having survived a few especially tough years of late—beginning in 2007, when the national economic downturn took its toll on golf development—the Ipswich Country Club will soon undergo a million-dollar makeover that is as symbolic of its bright future as it is deserved by its much-loved, lived-in past. Upgrades, which were set into motion by the Country Club’s owner, ClubCorp, will be completed by all local contractors and extend to the clubhouse, athletic facilities, and amenities. ClubCorp expects some of the most dramatic changes to take shape in the dining area, which will morph from a relatively formal setting into a more relaxed, communal space outfitted with WiFi, a lounge, fireplace, 80-inch TV, and a new bar and restaurant.
