Competing against some of the top rums in the world, this small producer took home the “Chairman’s Trophy” at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in New York this spring for its smooth gorgeous Queen’s Share, and bottles of Privateer’s Seasonal Release Gin are coveted by mixologists at top spots like the Barrel House and the Baldwin Bar. Perhaps the brisk sea air from nearby marshes helps make Privateer’s offerings special, but it’s mostly the deft touch of lauded head distiller Maggie Campbell, who never tires of tending the barrels she calls her babies, turning out high-proof spirits that demand thoughtful consumption. This Salem distillery is taking the North Shore by storm. Rumson’s was officially launched last December, but has already received some prominent awards. The Grand Reserve, for instance, won a double gold medal for Best Aged Rum last year from The Fifty Best, and Rumson’s Aged Rum won gold in the same competition.
