On September 14, 2016, Coastal Windows & Exteriors (CW&E), the North Shore’s leading roofing and window expert, will provide a top-of-the-line GAF Master Elite Lifetime roof, install ten energy-efficient, award-winning Soft-Lite windows, and rebuild a deck for an elderly Peabody homeowner in critical need. Her new roof will feature a transferrable twenty-five year labor workmanship warranty and a lifetime warranty on the shingles, a rare benefit that Coastal Windows & Exteriors is able to offer through its recognition as a certified Master Elite contractor, a certification shared by only 3% of roofing contractors in the United States. Her new Energy-Star award-winning windows feature one of the lowest air infiltration rates in the industry and will also have a transferable lifetime warranty.
The Peabody project, located at 5 Sanborn Street, comes just in time. The roof at the home is leaking, and has curling shingles and algae growth, which reveals that the shingles’ protective granules have been lost. Thanks in part to both the roof’s structural failure and the home’s old, inefficient windows, the homeowner also struggles with extremely high energy bills.
“This project will be one of the most ambitious that we’ve undertaken in Peabody this year,” says Don Preston, president of Habitat for Humanity North Shore. “Thanks to Coastal Windows & Exteriors’ generosity with the roof replacement, we are able to leverage funds from the City of Peabody Community Preservation Act toward updating the windows, which also need replacement, and fixing the front porch. This is a great example of bringing together the public, private, and non-profit sectors to accomplish more than any one of us could do alone.”
“We are excited to work with Habitat for Humanity’s “Critical Care: A Brush with Kindness” exterior home repair program, which offers services to low-income senior, disabled, and other homeowners in need,” says CW&E owner Stephanie Vanderbilt. “It’s an honor to be able to help in this way. Her new roof and the replacement of all of her windows will drastically reduce this homeowner’s energy bills and improve security too. We will also be rebuilding her deck, which has deteriorated and is currently unsafe. Our whole team is looking forward to dedicating one full day working on the site.”
Students from nearby Welch Elementary School will also observe the build and participate in a presentation on community service and the importance of energy-efficient, sustainable housing from Vanderbilt, who was formerly a teacher for the deaf in the Peabody Public Schools. Also expected to attend the build are Peabody Mayor Bettencourt’s Chief of Staff Chris Ryder and Peabody Ward 2 Councilor Peter McGinn.
This marks the third time that Coastal Windows & Exteriors has worked with North Shore Habitat for Humanity to help families in need. In 2013, CW&E provided a roof, windows, doors, and siding for a North Shore Habitat for Humanity project in Lynn, MA, with a total value of $54,000, as well as a Coastal celebration with a Wizard of Oz-inspired “No Place Like Home” theme for the community. The following fall, CW&E provided turkey donations for those three Habitat For Humanity families. They also donated a roof for another Critical Care family in Peabody, saving a roof that was collapsing right before the winter.

Vanderbilt will provide lunch, cider, and donuts for the entire Habitat for Humanity North Shore crew as well her team on Coastal Build Day.
