Northshore magazine recently spoke to Emily Evans, Ann Taylor style expert, about what to wear to this season.

Q: How can you achieve a cool, relaxed look without looking too casual?

A: Summer weather brings a more relaxed dress code into most offices. Try a shirt dress for a casual yet office appropriate look that is comfortable and on trend. Ann Taylor offers shirtdress styles with or without sleeves in both solids and patterns. It’s the perfect one-and-done piece that instantly creates a pulled together look.

Q. What are the rules or guidelines for appropriate attire for women? For example, is it ok to wear spaghetti straps or shorts?

A. Every office dress code is different so it’s important to consider the environment. In a more relaxed setting that allows shorts and rompers, be conscious of your shoe choice. As your hemline goes higher, you should opt for flats or a low heel. If thin strap dresses and tops are not accepted in your office, add the jacket from your summer suit or a lightweight cardigan.

Q. Obviously summer weather is not boot whether. What are the guidelines for footwear? What are the newest styles and colors?

A. My summer footwear go-to is a cork wedge sandal. It’s the perfect work to weekend sandal and remains comfy and stylish at the same time. If you are looking for height without a wedge, a block heel sandal is a great solution. I love a classic tan or nude sandal because it lengthens the leg and goes with almost anything.

Q. How about material selections? What are the best options for keeping cool in the hot summer months?

A. When shopping for your summer wardrobe, you must pay attention to materials and think about which are best for the blazing hot weather. Lace pieces are a great solution for keeping cool and are both feminine and stylish. They are also sheer so be sure to wear a lightweight tank under your floral lace tee to keep within office dress code.

Q. What are the 2015 summer color and pattern trends?

A. Stripes and nautical patterns are always a summer favorite. We all seem to incorporate more color into our wardrobes for summer. I love pretty pastels and all shades of blue from sky to navy. While color is fun, you can never go wrong with a fresh head-to-toe white look.
