Multiple branches of Gertrude Fiske’s family came together for an impromptu family reunion at Discover Portsmouth on April 5?, ? at ? a well-attended Members Opening Gala for Gertrude Fiske: American Master.

According to Lainey McCartney, exhibition curator, “Without the incredible support of the Fiske family, this exhibition would not have been possible. Their willingness to share memories and material brought color and texture to Fiske’s story.” She went on to speak about how struck she was when she first saw the artist’s paintings. The fact that she had never heard Fiske’s name “made me want to dig in and learn more.”

The almost 6,000 square feet of galleries were filled with guests viewing the

?more than 60 works of art, visiting with friends, listening to music by Ben Baldwin + Kent Allyn, and sipping an ale (a Grisette) brewed especially for the occasion by Throwback Brewery.

In addition to the main exhibition on the first floor, Gertrude Fiske: American Master, two companion exhibitions are located upstairs: Seacoast Masters Today featuring Amy Brnger, Donna Harkins, Sydney Bella Sparrow, and Pamela DuLong Williams; and Sisters of the Brush and Palette featuring Fiske contemporaries – painters Anne W. Carleton, Margaret J. Patterson, and the notable Portsmouth artist, Susan Ricker Knox. All three exhibitions are open to the public April 6 – September 30 at Discover Portsmouth.
