Dr. Hartmann is a board-certified general surgeon, the Medical Director of the Gerrish Breast Care Center and member of the multidisciplinary team at the Anna Jaques Cancer Center affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He has had a special interest in breast surgery for decades, and was among the first to use the sentinel node biopsy in New England in the 1990s. Over the years, he has performed approximately 1,000 breast procedures. As a dedicated breast surgeon he focuses exclusively on a variety of breast procedures related to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Dr. Hartmann, who has been involved with the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer since 1989, is among a national network of more than 1,500 volunteer physicians who are responsible for providing leadership and direction to establish, maintain, and support their facilities’ cancer programs.
Cancer Liaison Physicians are responsible for evaluating, interpreting, and reporting their facilities’ performance data through the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) and facilitating quality improvement initiatives based on data findings. In addition, the Cancer Liaison Physician is responsible for leading CoC initiatives within the cancer program and collaborating with agencies such as the American Cancer Society on behalf of the hospital. The CoC collects data from its accredited cancer programs and provides tools for these programs to facilitate analysis of patterns of diagnosis, treatment, and quality of care for patients treated at the hospital.
The appointment as Cancer Liaison Physician is another achievement in the continued effort and commitment by Anna Jaques Hospital, its cancer programs, and medical staff to enhance the quality of care offered right in the Newburyport community. In early 2016, the Gerrish Breast Care Center was granted a three-year full accreditation as a Certified Breast Center by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. The Gerrish Breast Care Center is one of only 19 Certified Breast Centers in Massachusetts.
