The Captain’s Party

Annual fundraising event at the Cape Ann Museum, June 16.

The Cape Ann Museum will host its annual fundraising event, the Captain’s Party, on Saturday, June 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event will take place in the museum’s courtyard and throughout the galleries at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester.

The Captain’s Party is celebrated each year in honor of Captain Elias Davis (1758-1821), a successful Gloucester captain whose three-story Federal-style home, built in 1804 and known as the Davis House, has served as an integral part of the museum since its founding in 1873.

The theme of this year’s party celebrates P.T. Barnum’s “Greatest Show on Earth!” and the circus parade that wowed the people of Gloucester and nearby towns during the early morning hours of May 26, 1873. Excitement spread throughout the city as a menagerie of exotic animals—birds, reptiles, sea lions, elephants, zebras, and elk among them—along with 100,000 “curiosities” wound their way down Gloucester’s Main Street in a parade that included 12 chariots, 100 golden cages, 2,000 men and horses, and three musical bands.
