Familiar comfort foods get a new spin at Salt, David Gillis’s buzzy “gastropub.” Good old meatloaf becomes positively crave worthy in his hands, made with locally sourced pork, beef, and veal, studded with foie gras. And many North Shore natives as well as newbies swoon for his “crabbies”—a time-honored regional specialty featuring an English muffin topped with crab and Old English cheese. Drinks are just as carefully considered, with an emphasis on small-batch artisanal producers, as well as strong representation from hometown distillers and brewers. Half the tables are reserved for walk-ins every night, and a kids’ menu, developed with input from Gillis’s children, makes Salt a welcoming neighborhood spot for everyone.
