Buddhism in America with Dr. Laura Harrington

February 10 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Sun Feb 10th 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Zen Center North Shore123 Park St, Beverly, MA 01915, USA
Please join us for this special talk by one of the shining lights at Boston University’s Department of Religion.

What is “American Buddhism” and who practices it? What particular forms does it take, and how did it become that way? We will begin by developing a genealogy of contemporary American Buddhist modernism, from its debut at the Chicago’s World Fair of 1893 to Japanese-American internment camps, Beat Generation and counterculture movements, Reagan neoliberalism through 9/11.

We will then draw on that history to make sense of the present. We will unpack a range of hot-button topics in American Buddhism, from the commodification of mindfulness, to the marginalization of African-American Buddhists, and report on local Theravada, Zen, and Tibetan Buddhist communities.

Followed by tea and conversation.

Dr. Harrington received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Columbia University in 2002 and subsequently taught Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, Asian Religions, Buddhist Art and Comparative Asian Medical Traditions at Trinity College and Wesleyan University. Her interests also include Tibetan Buddhism in the United States.

Professor Harrington’s research focuses on the study of Buddhist material culture, with a particular emphasis on the role of embodiment and emotion in the production of religious belief. Her research interests also include the impact of so-called “modernity” discourse on the study of Tibet.

Her recent publications include a translation of a Tantric commentary by the second Dalai Lama of Tibet, and an exploration of a Tibetan Buddhist ritual through the lens of cognitive aesthetics.
Please aim to be at the Zen Center 10 minutes before scheduled events.
