Sugar and Spice: Sweet Treats of the 18th Century – Free Admission During February School Vacation

February 24, 2024 @ 10:00 am 2:00 pm

Marblehead Museum is excited to announce a new program – Sugar and Spice: Sweet Treats of the 18th Century. It will be held rain or shine on Saturday, February 24th, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., in the Jeremiah Lee Mansion. Admission for this event is free.

During this drop-in event, guests can visit the Jeremiah Lee Mansion Kitchen to help Culinary Historian Melissa Vickers as she prepares 18th century gingerbread, lemon drops, march-pane, and pepper cakes. While there, they can learn about the availability and accessibility of sugar and spices in Colonial New England, including how and where sugar was produced, the many uses of today’s favorite “sweet” spices, and what types of flavorings were common before vanilla became a pantry staple.

Before leaving the Museum, all visitors are welcome to take a tour of the Mansion’s first floor, which will be open and free of charge during this program.
