Manchester Summer Chamber Music Concert Series 2023
August 5, 2023 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Manchester Summer Chamber Music (“MSCM”) returns this August after a three-year absence to celebrate its 12th season with five events around the North Shore. Combining the magic of warm summer nights and dynamic interpretations of chamber music, along with vibrant new music, MSCM offers exciting performances and welcomes audiences of all backgrounds and ages.
Founded in 2009 by Manchester, MA native Sage Cole and Andover, MA native Lorna Tsai, MSCM is dedicated to sharing classical music of the highest caliber with the communities of the North Shore. Sixteen musicians from around the world will come together throughout August to create the joyful, engaging concerts that audiences have come to expect from MSCM.
As the resident chamber music group of the Barn at Crane Estate, MSCM will present three Saturday night concerts at the Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA. MSCM will also present its annual house concert with pianist Dr. Ryo Yanagitani at the residence of Stephen and Isabella Bates in Manchester, MA.
As this event is routinely sold-out, MSCM will be presenting it two nights in a row.
August 5, 7 PM: Homecoming The first of the three concerts at the Barn at Crane Estate. This concert will be the first MSCM concert since 2019, and audiences will be warmly welcomed back with music that spans from the comforting Cello Suite No. 1 by J.S. Bach to the folk-infused, rollicking “Strum” of Jesse Montgomery.
The concert includes other classical favorites such as Vivaldi’s “Summer” and movements from Beethoven’s middle string quartets that set the tone of MSCM’s homecoming as resoundingly joyful.
August 9 and 10, 7 PM: Ludwig at 253 Held at the residence of Stephen and Isabella Bates, 2 Masconomo Street, Manchester, MA. Dr. Ryo Yanagitani leads a narrative concert that (belatedly) celebrates Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday. The program consists of movements from the “Moonlight” Sonata, the Cello Sonata No. 3, and the complete “Archduke” Piano Trio.
August 12, 7 PM: Everlasting The second concert at the Barn at Crane Estate. Centered around Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet and Golijov’s Tenebrae, this concert delves into the many layers of the human experience, both the transient and everlasting.
August 19, 7 PM: Good Friends The last concert of the season, and the third concert at the Barn at Crane Estate. Six incredible string players, including MSCM founding members, Estelle Choi and Verena Sennekamp, will close out the season with a rousing concert including movements from Mozart’s Grande Sestetto Concertante, Turtle Island String Quartet’s Balakrishnan’s String Quartet No. 1, and the complete Souvenir de Florence by Tchaikovsky.
