Join The Boston Philharmonic at Symphony Hall as Benjamin Zander conducts the orchestra in 20th-century masterpieces from England, Hungary, and the Soviet Union. The Passacaglia from Britten’s Peter Grimes depicts the oppression of the individual by a harsh society. Shostakovich Symphony #10 does it with a whole nation as the victim.
Bartok’s Olympian 3rd piano concerto, with Benjamin Hochman, serves as a respite between these two powerful indictments. This is a concert about the capacity of human beings to overcome enormous odds. Maestro Zander’s legendary pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m.
