Girls on the Run of Greater Boston will host its end-of-season 5k event on Sunday, December 4 at Dedham High School at 10:00 AM.  Girls on the Run is a physical-activity based, positive youth development (PA-PYD) program that prepares 3rd to 8th grade girls for a 5k event along with empowering them to reach their potential and learn life lessons.

The Greater Boston council has just under 400 girls taking part in the fall season, with 23 teams throughout the area, coming from Acton, Belmont, Brookline, Cambridge, Canton, Chelsea, Dedham, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hancom Air Force Base, Hopkinton, Hudson, Methuen, Needham, Newton and Stoughton. The celebratory 5k brings all the teams together to end the season with an exciting event, showing them that the finish line is just the beginning when it comes to going after their dreams.

“I signed up to coach for Girls on the Run because I love kids and running. When I became involved, I didn’t realize how much the girls on my team would transform over the season as they realize that they can do anything – even run a 5K – with self-confidence, friendship, positive thinking, and many more qualities that make them a Girl on the Run,” said Elizabeth Lisowski, three time coach of the Charles River YMCA team. “It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience to watch the girls on my team cross the 5K finish line and I can’t wait to watch many more do the same.”

Girls on the Run expects close to 900 runners to participate in the Fall 5k. Each girl runs with a running buddy, and the event is also open to community runners. Registration is still open online through Wednesday November 30th and on-site registration will be available at the event. The cost to participate is $30, which includes the event fee and event shirt. All proceeds go towards the Girls on the Run Program.  The event will begin at 10:00 am on Sunday December 4th, and early arrival is suggested.  For more information about the event, how to register and volunteer opportunities, visit www.girlsontherunboston.org

With the fall season of Girls on the Run wrapping up, plans are underway for the spring season, which kicks off in March. Site applications for new and returning sites are now being accepted for the Spring 2017 season.
