The beiges, whites, and neutrals that help build a wardrobe aren’t really Ocean Lilly Otte’s style. “I love to bring color and pattern into every season. I also don’t believe in saving nice garments for a special occasion,” she says. “For me, every day is an occasion.”
Otte brings that vibrant individualism to her Boston boutique, Élevée, a bright and welcoming shop that opened its doors a year ago. The space is stocked with distinctive men’s and women’s apparel, playful (and hypoallergenic) accessories, lively artwork and home décor, and the brand’s own organic apothecary line.

A Creative Path to Retail
Everything Otte sells is an expression of her unique point of view, developed during her rather nontraditional upbringing. A homeschooled student, she split her time among her native West Peabody, Florida, and the road as her family traveled to her brother’s athletic competitions.
Otte was given a lot of freedom to pursue her own interests. She took art classes with classmates 50 years her senior, delved into computers and technology, and developed her skills in photography. “I had a very unconventional childhood,” she says.
In her early 20s, Otte moved to Los Angeles to work in the fashion industry. Eventually, she returned to the East Coast, living in Marblehead and helping local businesses with their websites and social media presence. Occasionally, she’d help out in her clients’ shops, where she developed a love of the retail world.
Building Élevée

She worked for a time as a stylist in Boston but missed the customer interactions from her retail days and decided to run a pop-up shop centered on the theme of travel. It was successful beyond her expectations. She considered calling it a win and moving on to her next endeavor, but a mentor gently asked her why she was thinking so small. So, instead, she decided to open her 2,000-square-foot South End boutique.
The project required a massive renovation and meant dealing with businesspeople who didn’t want to take a young woman seriously. But she persevered.
“I decided to follow my heart and reinvest,” she says. “It was a big learning curve, but it was very fulfilling.”
A Place to Come Together
She is committed to making Élevée the sort of place that nurtures the community connections she so valued during her initial stint in retail. She runs a monthly book club out of the store and hosts regular movie nights, complete with snacks. Both are free.
“I’m trying to create a third space where community can come together and it’s not about buying things,” she says. “It’s just about being together.”
