Step into Light and Shade Inside

Anila Quayyum  Agha’ Intersections

Sunday afternoonts at 3 p.m. beginning March 20

Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) has teamed up with three area studios Yoga Sakti and Green Tea Yoga in Salem and Yoga Loft of Marblehead to launch a spring yoga series inside an award-winning art installation. Join local instructors on Sunday afternoons for an ongoing series of gentle yoga classes inside Anila Quayyum Agha’s “Intersections.” Be bathed in light and shadow from a laser-cut steel lantern that conjures the design of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, a historic site of crosscultural intersection where a thousand years ago Islamic and Western cultures thrived in coexistence.

“Imagine practicing yoga inside a work of art that was inspired by a beautiful meeting place where all division and conflict is transcended,” says Jennifer Craig, a participating yoga instructor. “It leaves us in a state of awe.”

Participants should bring a yoga mat, and a smartphone if they want to capture the experience. Use the hashtags # PEMYoga and # AnilaAgha. See pem.org/calendar to register. Reservations required by the Friday before each Sunday class.
