If you ask us, any time is a good time for lobster. From a straight-up boiled dinner, with a bag of chips and a side of cole slaw, to lobster donuts (yes, that’s right, lobster donuts), here are some of the top places to grab lobster any way you like.

Most innovative: Bob Lobster

While Bob Lobster serves up all the classics, from a terrific boiled dinner to a tasty lobster roll, chef Brad DeLibero’s specials, like a spicy lobster roll dressed with Sriracha Aioli and Fried Banana Peppers and a lobster poutine—French fries dripping with lobster cream sauce and chunks of fresh lobster meat—are worth the trip. BYOB and grab a seat outside with views of the surrounding marshland, or duck into the freshly painted dining room if the greenheads are biting. 49 Plum Island Turnpike, Newbury, 978-465-7100, boblobster.com

Most Unique: Speakeasy Donuts

This pop-up shop based in Beverly recently rolled out a crazy occasional special: the Lobster Brown Butter Glaze Ritz Crunch Donut. With a claw reaching out the center and a mix of sweet, savory, buttery, fishy goodness, it is not for the faint of heart. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to see where they may pop up next.

Best classic lobster shack: Roy Moore

It can be hard to find a flawlessly cooked crustacean, but Roy Moore gets it right every time. Lobsters are continually steamed to perfection, so there is seldom a wait. Extras are few, so bring your own lobster crackers and alcoholic drinks. The tiny sea-worn deck offers communal seating with a view of Rockport Harbor—you may find yourself next to a few local lobstermen or a group of tourists from Japan. Plan lunch or early dinner—this shack shuts promptly at 6 p.m.

Best Upscale Lobster experience: Island Creek Oyster Bar

Chef Jeremy Sewall ‘s cousin Mark Sewall, who fishes out of York Harbor, Maine, provides the crustaceans for this beautifully designed space. The lobster roll is served several ways, including warm buttered or a classic family lobster salad recipe. But for the ultimate indulgence, order the Lobster Roe Noodles and enjoy beautiful orangy-pink hued fettucini, topped with grilled lobster, braised short rib, mushrooms, and pecorino.

Freshest Lobster Roll: Joe’s On A Roll

Generous portions of sweet, tender chunks, perfectly dressed, and wallet-friendly prices are the draw at this mobile lobster truck. Nicole Birarelli’s two lobster-fishing sons supply her with their fresh catch from the marina just across from her regular spot on Water Street in Beverly.

A brick-and-mortar location will be coming to Federal Street this summer, but we’d recommend grabbing a roll—and some of her rich, sherry-laced lobster bisque—from the truck and hitting the beach just down the street.
